WASHINGTON – Democratic Minnesota Congresswomen Betty McCollum, Angie Craig, Ilhan Omar and Kelly Morrison are among 53 members of Congress to cosponsor articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
“Kristi Noem’s ICE agents illegally blocked my colleagues and me from performing our legal right and Constitutional duty of performing Congressional oversight of taxpayer-funded federal facilities at the Whipple detention center,” Morrison said in a video on social media.
The articles of impeachment include obstruction of Congress, violation of public trust and self-dealing.
Omar, Craig and Morrison said the obstruction article was filed because ICE agents “illegally” blocked them from performing congressional oversight at the Whipple detention center in Minneapolis.
They say violation of public trust articles are for allegedly denying ICE detainees due process and violating the first and fourth amendments.
The self-dealing articles come over reports Noem awarded $220 million in contracts to a firm run by her top spokesperson’s husband.
The filing of the articles of impeachment was led by Democratic Illinois Congresswoman Robin Kelly.
“How silly during a serious time. As ICE officers are facing a 1,300% increase in assaults against them, Rep. Kelly is more focused on showmanship and fundraising clicks than actually cleaning up her crime-ridden Chicago district,” a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said in a statement. “We hope she would get serious about doing her job to protect American people, which is what this Department is doing under Secretary Noem.”
