Moorhead City Council supports building a psychiatric residential treatment facility

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Moorhead City Council Members support the Clay County Commission’s plan to ask for $25 million in state money to build a psychiatric residential treatment facility in the county.

Clay County Commissioner Jenny Mongeau asked the council to support the plan.

“These children are not just statistics. They played at our city parks, they are children attending schools in our county and their families are part of the fabric of what binds us together in Clay County. Addressing this need here will allow them to stay close to their families, their schools, their support and the communities that are raising them while meeting their significant needs,” Mongeau said.

The facility would help those under age 21 with complex mental health conditions. The nearest psychiatric residential treatment facility to Clay County is in Cold Spring which is in the St. Cloud area.

The City Council didn’t vote on a resolution to support the project, but will send a letter of support to the county.

City Councils in Hawley, Glyndon and Dilworth also support the plan in addition to DFL State Senator Rob Kupec of Moorhead, Republican State Senator Jordan Rassmusson of Fergus Falls and DFL State Representative Heather Keeler of Moorhead.
