Moorhead comes from behind, defeats Edina to advance to state championship

(ST. PAUL, MINN) — It wasn’t easy, but the Moorhead Spuds have advanced to the 2025 Minnesota Class AA boys hockey championship game by defeating Edina 4-3 at the Xcel Energy Center on Friday night.

“Excited for the kids,” Spuds head coach Jon Ammerman said after the game’s conclusion. “We’ve had the good fortune of playing in the championship game a time or two.”

Down 3-2 heading into the second period, the Spuds scored two unanswered goals to advance.

The game was deadlocked at 3-3 until the final minute. Brooks Cullen connected with Zac Zimmerman for his second of the night at the 16:02 mark of the third period, the eventual game-winner after a feverish attempt in the final 58 seconds by the Spuds to take a two-goal advantage on an empty Edina net.

“I was just trying to get it (the puck) to the net,” Zimmerman said of the eventual game winning goal.

Cullen and Mason Kraft also picked up goals for the Spuds, who now face Stillwater Area for the 2025 Minnesota Class AA championship tonight at the Xcel Energy Center. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

“They (Stillwater Area) are a great team,” Charlie Stenehjem said. “So, we’re going to have our hands full.”

WDAY Radio will have coverage of the game, beginning with the pregame show at 6:30 p.m. Larry Knutson will have the play-by-play from the X.
