Moorhead reports increase in catalytic converter thefts

MOORHEAD, MINN. – Moorhead Police say there’s been a rise in theft of catalytic converters.

“While the part itself isn’t very large, it contains precious metals that make it a common target for thieves,” the department said.

The thefts happen quickly – most times in under two minutes, police say. Replacing the converter is expensive, however, costing anywhere between $1,000 and $3,000, depending on the vehicle type.

Authorities say vehicle owners can reduce the risk of becoming a victim by parking in well-lit or busy areas, using a garage when possible, installing motion lights or exterior cameras at home and reporting suspicious activity right away.
