(Buenos Aires) -- The vice president of Argentina has survived an assassination attempt.

Officials in Buenos Aires say Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was greeting supporters outside her home Thursday when a man pointed a handgun at her head at point blank range and pulled the trigger. The gun didn't go off, however, and the alleged gunman was taken into custody.

In a televised address Thursday night, Argentine President Alberto Fernandez called the assassination attempt an attack on democracy.

The suspect has been identified as a Brazilian national.
