(Evanston, IL) -- Scientists believe a data tracking necklace can help smokers kick the habit.
Researchers at Northwestern Medicine in Illinois think tracking real life actions and not self reported usage is the best way to help smokers quit.
The SmokeMon device can tell how long a person placed a cigarette in their mouth and is worn around the neck with sensors measuring the thermal activity. It determines the number of puffs, their duration and the time between each hit of the cigarette.
The researchers plan to refine the design of the SmokeMon so it looks more like a piece of jewelry.
