(Auckland) -- New research claims over 170-trillion plastic particles weighing about two-million metric tons are currently floating in the world's oceans.
The peer-reviewed paper published Wednesday says that number could nearly triple by 2040 if no action is taken.
The authors of the paper warn that "cleanup is futile" if plastic continues to be produced at its current rate.
They blame the plastic industry for the problem and are urging lawmakers to enact policy measures that would focus on recycling and reducing the production of plastic.
