(Orlando, FL) -- A Florida high school teacher is being fired for an assignment that had students write their own obituaries before an active shooter drill.

Psychology teacher Jeffrey Keene at Doctor Phillips High School in Orlando told NBC News he thought the exercise would help the 11th and 12th grade students "reflect on their lives to figure out what's important to them and how they want to live their lives".

Students said school administrators asked them about the assignment and he was fired the same day. Keene was hired at the school in January.

He said he did "nothing wrong" in his opinion and emphasized the importance of speaking with students truthfully.
