(Fair Oaks, CA) -- See ya later, alligator. Residents in Fair Oaks, near Sacramento, are able to say that after a recent encounter.

A man was fishing at Sailor Bar along the American River last week when he saw something that didn't belong, so he called a friend to help him out.

It was a seven-foot alligator hanging out on some rocks. The friend jumped on top of the hissing reptile, taped its mouth shut and put it in his trailer.

The Wildlife Care Association says the most likely explanation is someone was keeping the gator as a pet then got rid of it when it got too big.

The agency also adds California has very strict laws about owning wildlife, like alligators.
