(Washington, DC) -- Two senators are sponsoring a bill to extend President Biden's authority to expel migrants seeking asylum without a hearing when that power expires next week.

The bill Arizona Independent Kyrsten Sinema and North Carolina Republican Thom Tillis introduced yesterday is aimed at holding off an expected surge at the southern border when the health policy known as Title 42 expires next Thursday. Title 42 allows the federal government to take emergency action to restrict immigration to the United States.

An estimated 2.37 million people crossed the southern border in 2022, and an estimated 1.22 million have crossed the border in between October 2022 and March of 2023. You can find up-to-date numbers by clicking here
