McCarthy: progress being made on debt ceiling

(Washington, DC)  --  Progress is being made in negotiations between the White House and Republicans on a bill to raise the debt ceiling.

That's what Speaker Kevin McCarthy told reporters on Capitol Hill this afternoon.

He said he believes an agreement will be made ahead of an early June deadline and the U.S. will avoid default.

He's been firm in telling Democrats there will be no tax increases and the government will have to spend less than what it did this year.

Republican negotiators met with President Biden's team today at the White House.
