(Washington, DC) -- Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama is doubling down on past comments he made about white nationalists serving in the military.
In an interview with CNN's Kaitlin Collins, Tuberville pushed back against the idea that white nationalists are racist by definition.
He said that definition is a matter of opinion, adding that to him it simply means an "American."
The Republican repeatedly said, however, he rejects racism.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called on Tuberville to apologize for his remarks.
The Alabama Senator during an interview in May criticized the Defense Department for efforts to oust white nationalists from the military.
