House approves first spending bill

(Washington, DC)  --  The House is approving the first of 12 appropriations bills as Congress leaves for August recess.

The bill allocates funding for military construction, the Department of Veterans Affairs and related agencies.

Republicans marked up their spending bills at fiscal 2022 levels, below the caps set in the debt ceiling deal struck by President Biden and House Speaker McCarthy.

The bill passed largely along party lines and is likely dead on arrival in the Senate.
