CDC: wastewater testing detects new Covid-19 variant

(Atlanta, GA)  --  Early wastewater testing in the US detected a new highly mutated coronavirus variant.

That's according to a risk assessment from the CDC.

It didn't give details on where the sample was collected, but said it was part of routine monitoring through the National Wastewater Surveillance System.

That makes nine sequences of the new variant reported across the world from human COVID-19 infections, in Denmark, South Africa, the UK and Israeli.

It was also detected at low levels in wastewater in Switzerland.
