(Washington, DC) - Kevin McCarthy is no longer the Speaker of the House.
The chamber voted 216-210 to boot McCarthy from is job today in a historic vote forced by Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz.
North Dakota Congressman Kelly Armstrong spoke in support of McCarthy.
“Let’s be clear why we’re here,” he said. “Because the incentive structure in this town is completely broken. We no longer value loyalty, integrity, confidence or collaboration. Instead, we have descended to a place where clickse, TV hits and the never-ending quest for the most mediocre taste of celebrity drives decisions and encourages juvenile behavior that is so far beneath this esteemed body.”
Armstrong said McCarthy “has done more in nine months to restore the people’s house than any speaker in decades.”
A handful of conservatives unhappy with McCarthy's performance joined Democrats in voting for the California Republican's removal.
It's the first time in U.S. history that a Speaker has been ousted by a "motion to vacate" the position.
North Carolina Congressman Patrick McHenry is now Acting Speaker overseeing the chamber until a new Speaker election is held.
