(Moscow, Russia)  --  Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is dead.

Reports today from Russian media say the staunch critic of President Vladimir Putin died while behind bars at the age of 47. Navalny led protests against the Kremlin for more than a decade, even daring to run against Putin. Back in 2020, he fell ill from a military nerve agent, poisoned - he said - on the direct orders of Vladimir Putin. He was sentenced last August to 19 years in a maximum security penal colony on charges of extremism.

The Interfax news agency says Navalny passed away after going for a short walk, with efforts to resuscitate him unsuccessful.
