(St. Paul, MN) -- The GOP-led Minnesota Senate is advancing  "tough on crime" legislation.

The 200-million dollar package passed the Senate Monday after four hours of debate in a partisan vote. The legislation focuses on the recruitment and retention of law enforcement, increasing criminal penalties, making changes to sentencing guidelines, and spotlighting prosecutors and judges to depart from the guidelines.

The proposals will go up against House Democrats' 200 million dollar public safety package that focuses on the root causes of crime.

Governor Tim Walz is also proposing a 300 million dollar supplemental public safety budget.
