(Bismarck, ND) -- North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum is proclaiming June as Safety Month throughout the state.

North Dakota has participated in National Safety Month every year in June since 1996. The North Dakota Safety Council looks to improve workplace safety though four weeks of focus. Each week identifying a topic which contributes or prevents injuries from occurring on the job. Those topics include musculoskeletal disorders, workplace impairment, injury prevention, and the combination of slips, trips and falls.

"National Safety Month is a way to build awareness of everyday safety and simple steps we can take to reduce or eliminate our risk of injury," says Chuck Clairmont, Executive Director of the NDSC. "We should strive across North Dakota for zero preventable injuries and deaths. National Safety Month focuses on different aspects of traffic, work and home safety. It offers important reminders for us all."

The North Dakota Safety Council is also expanding the conversation to roadways and summer travel. North Dakota Highway Patrol officials are keenly aware of the 100 deadliest days of summer, a time which families and teens spend much more time of roadways. Many industries, like construction, farming, and energy, increase outdoor work during this time period.

“We’re up against some of the same safety challenges today as we were 26 years ago, in addition to new and evolving risks,” said Lorraine Martin, president, and CEO of NSC. “While safety should be top-of-mind all year, the National Safety Council urges employers and employees alike to focus even more acutely on safety this month."
