(St. Paul, MN) -- Minnesota lawmakers are considering a proposal aimed at improving the reporting and tracking of hate crimes and bias incidents.

The measure would allow trusted community groups to gather information from those uncomfortable reporting bias incidents to police.

The bill also includes funding to train law enforcement officers on ways to better identify bias-motivated crimes. Advocates say hate incidents have risen sharply in Minnesota, and many go unreported.

The U.S. Department of Justice says just over 300 bias incidents were reported in the state in 2021.
