(Bismarck, ND) -- State officials are tracking a significant rise in identity theft throughout North Dakota.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, cases of identity theft in the state jumped from 448 in 2018 to 848 in 2021. Although figures from last year have not been published, state officials say that number is likely to be higher. An FTC spokesperson says the continuing rise in identity theft cases can be traced to a corresponding increase in online shopping. Authorities say online shoppers should take care to make sure they're doing business on a secure website displaying a padlock icon adjacent to the web address.
