(Brainerd, ND) -- A woman is seriously injured after being attacked by a black bear in the Brainerd Lakes area.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says the woman was staying at the cabin near Gull Lake and was clawed by the bear several times as she was trying to get her dog in the cabin. The woman suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The DNR says the bear was likely startled. Since 1987, only nine other bear encounters left a person with serious injuries. You can learn more about outdoor safety in bear country by clicking here
