(Brainerd, ND) -- Brainerd officials are advising residents to boil their water before drinking or using it.

Brainerd Public Utilities says the water is contaminated with total coliform bacteria because of the construction that occurred on July 27. The bacteria can pose a special health risk for infants young children, some elderly people and immunocompromised people.

Authorities urge users to not drink, cook with, or brush teeth with tap water without boiling first. Using bottled water is a safe alternative. Water should be at a roiling boil for at least one minute, and rested to cool before drinking.

Officials say they expect to resolve the issue by August 14th.
