(St. Paul, MN) -- A group is suing the state of Minnesota over an election misinformation law that went into effect earlier this year.

The Minnesota Voters Alliance is challenging the law, saying it could keep people from freely speaking about politics and political issues.  The law makes it a misdemeanor to knowingly spread false information designed to keep people from voting up to 60 days before an election.

The Secretary of State has defended the law, saying it sets a high bar by requiring prosecutors to prove that a comment was made in an attempt to keep someone from voting.
