Former Bismarck Police Officer facing charge after alleged use of excessive force

(Bismarck, ND) -- A former Bismarck Police Officer is facing assault charges as the department looks into allegations of excessive force.

George Huff was fired from the Bismarck Police Department last March after an investigation revealed he struck 73-year-old Keith Erlandson several times with handcuffs in his hands. Two other responding officers told investigators they believe excessive force was used. The police car's dash camera didn't capture the initial strikes, but caught Huff striking the man on the neck with his elbow. Huff told investigators when he and the man fell to the ground, he believed the man was trying to bite him.

Huff currently faces a misdemeanor simple assault charge based on the incident.
