(Grand Forks, ND) -- The Grand Forks City Council has approved the a preliminary authorization of an expansion to the city's wastewater treatment plant.

Authorities say construction will begin in November and will be broken into two phases. The first phase involves making what officials say are necessary updates and repairs to the existing wastewater treatment facility. Phase two involves the expansion of the plant and construction of new features to increase facility capacity and is expected to start in 2027.

City officials say the growing population makes updates necessary, as the current facility is more than 20 years old.
