Minnesota adds 8,000 jobs in September across the state

(St. Paul, MN) --  Minnesota officials are sharing the most recent data behind jobs increases in the state. 

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development says the total number of non-farm jobs in the state increased by 8,000. According to MN DEED data, the number of jobs available has increased statewide since March of 2023. In addition, Minnesota added 1,500 workers to the state. 

“Minnesota continues to add jobs and draw more people into the labor force – that’s great news,” said DEED Commissioner Matt Varilek. “DEED is focused on helping more people join or rejoin the labor force on in-demand career paths. New DEED programs, like our Drive for 5 Initiative launched last week, will do just that.”

Minnesota's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate and labor participation rate stayed consistent, staying at 3.1% and 68.5% respectively.

The reports also broke down the biggest gains and losses for industries in the state. Comparing data over the last 12 months, the state gained 49,809 payroll jobs, an increase of 1.7%. Construction saw the most growth, especially in Heavy and Civil Engineering Construction (8.3%), Building Equipment Contractors (7.6%), and Specialty Trade Contractors (5.8%). Manufacturing saw the most job losses at 0.5%, for a total of 1,721 less positions. The losses were largely felt in Nondurable Goods, like Animal Slaughtering and Processing (-7.7%) and Food Manufacturing (-2.7%). 

“Over-the-year job growth remains positive and steady for Minnesota, especially in the Construction and Trade, Transportation & Utilities supersectors,” said DEED Labor Market Information Office Director Angelina Nguyễn. “This is a good sign of long-term investment in and development of our state’s infrastructure.”
