Man injured by gunfire following hunt in Hubbard County

(Helga Township, Minn.) – A 50-year-old man suffered injuries in a hunting accident Sunday morning in rural Hubbard County, Minn.

According to the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office, at 9:56 a.m., authorities received a call of an individual that was shot with a deer rifle in Helga Township, just west of Cass Lake, Minn. Deputies arrived to the address on Hubbard County Road 9, where they found 50-year-old Gary Peters bleeding from gunshot wounds.

The subsequent investigation showed that Peters had taken a 10-year-old juvenile out deer hunting Sunday morning. The youth deer hunting season was set to wrap up Sunday.

After returning to the truck, Peters instructed the juvenile to unload the rifle. While trying to unload the bolt action Ruger .270 caliber rifle, the youth squeezed the trigger while Peters was standing in the line of fire. The bullet struck Peters and went through both buttocks.

Peters was transported by ambulance to Sanford Hospital in Bemidji, before being airlifted to a Fargo hospital due to the seriousness of his injuries.
