Former Roseau doctor sentenced to 4 months in prison in tax evasion scheme

(Minneapolis, MN) -- A former Roseau doctor is going to prison for evading close to $484,164 in taxes.

Joseph Meyer has been sentenced after pleading guilty to four months behind bars, along with six months of home confinement. He also has been ordered to pay what he owes in back taxes. Meyer pleaded guilty to tax evasion in connection to his scheme that began as far back as 2000, while working for the Mayo Clinic, until 2018.

"Meyer repeatedly challenged his tax obligations in court, concealed his taxable income, and even sued his rental tenants for complying with legitimate IRS levies. Meyer’s evasion resulted in a total tax loss of $484,164," said officials who prosecuted Meyer.

Meyer is also required to pay full restitution in the case.
