(Minneapolis, MN) -- The number of drivers charged for fleeing police in Minnesota has skyrocketed over the last decade.
Court records show more than two-thousand people were charged for fleeing police in a motor vehicle last year.
That's a more than 130-percent increase compared to 2013, when less than 900 people charged with the same crime.
Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt told KARE11 that she believes its because the "consequences aren't harsh enough."
Witt also said some suspects think police aren't allowed to chase them due to no-chase policies by some law enforcement agencies.
However, Chief Hennepin County Public Defender Mike Berger believes prosecutors are just choosing to charge people with fleeing more these days.
