North Dakota officials say they will appeal Federal Court decision that rejected 2021 redistricting plan

(Bismarck, ND) -- North Dakota is expected to appeal a recent ruling over the state's 2021 redistricting plan.

The office of Secretary of State Michael Howe says the state will fight back against last week's federal court ruling that found the maps in violation of Native Americans' voting rights. The proposed maps would lead to Native residents holding two House seats and zero Senate seats.  The plan drafted by the Turtle Mountain Band and Spirit Lake Tribe would provide three House seats and one Senate seat.

The state's latest move was in response to Monday's decision by the appeals court that threw out an Arkansas case over racial gerrymandering.
