Former Minnesota police officer assaulted in federal prison

(Tucson, Ariz.) – The former Minnesota police officer who was convicted of killing George Floyd is expected to survive after he was stabbed at a federal prison in Arizona.

Derek Chauvin is serving over 20 years in a federal prison for Floyd's murder in 2020 in Minneapolis.  Officials say Chauvin was attacked with a knife, but his injuries weren't life threatening.

Chauvin's attorney says his legal team is still trying to get details on what happened.

In a statement provided to WDAY/WZFG Radio News, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said, "I am sad to hear that Derek Chauvin was the target of violence. He was duly convicted of his crimes and, like any incarcerated individual, he should be able to serve his sentence without fear of retaliation or violence."
