(St. Paul, MN) -- Minnesota wildlife officials are looking to buy seedlings from anyone who is willing to collect them this winter.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is looking to buy black spruce cones from collectors this winter. The cones are needed for their seeds, which will be used to help reforest 3,000 acres of black spruce forest next year.

“Over the last few years, the number of collectors has decreased and we are in critical need of black spruce cones” said Sarah Ebert, State Forest Nursery manager. "We pay people $100 per bushel, which is about nine gallons of cones. Collecting black spruce now is a great way to earn some cash before the holidays.”

The department is buying cones until February 2024. You can find more information about cone collecting and instructions about drop-off sites by clicking here.
