(Upper Red Lake, MN) -- A plane that attempted to land on the frozen Upper Red Lake broke through early Tuesday morning after sliding onto a thin section of ice.

The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office says the plane, a Cessna 172 Sky Hawk, attempted to land on a safe section of ice but slid into an area that was approximately two inches thick. The two occupants were able to escape safely. They were brought to a nearby resort and provided dry clothing. No one was injured in the crash.

The occupants were flying to Upper Red Lake for a day of ice fishing. Authorities say a lack of snow on the ice led to the plane skidding on ice much farther than intended.

The plane remains on the broken section of ice as of this publication. Arrangements for a recovery effort are being coordinated by the pilot, who is expected to contact the sheriff's office after the vehicle is removed from the lake.
