Flood warnings issued on Red, Wild Rice Rivers

(Grand Forks, ND) — The National Weather Service has issued ice warnings in the past.

On Tuesday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a warning that is atypical for the winter season — a flood warning.

“It’s a rare event,” Flag Family Chief Meteorologist Dean Wysocki said of the flood warning issuance.

The weather service says the flood warning for the Red River of the North at both Fargo and Wahpeton, along with the Wild Rice River at Abercrombie, have been placed under a floodd warning. Recent rainfall due to a large area of low pressure with accompanying above normal seasonal temperatures resulted in up to around two inches of liquid precipitation falling in the southern Red River Basin.

The rain fell on mostly frozen ground allowing the water to run off into into the mainstem Red River.
