Minnesota man sentenced to seven years in prison for attempting to buy fake grenades from FBI informant

(Savage, MN) -- A Savage, Minnesota man is going to prison for nearly seven years after he was caught buying machine gun parts and phony grenades from someone who turned out to be an FBI informant.

21-year-old River William Smith will also serve three years of supervised release. Through a the FBI investigation, authorities learned Smith was preparing for a "violent exchange with police", that he was sympathetic with the parkland mass shooter, and admired the person charged with shootings at a Colorado Springs LGBTQ nightclub.

Citizens tipped off authorities about disturbing behavior by Smith at a gun range.
