ND Parks and Recreation offering alternatives to winter activities

(Bismarck, ND) -- Amid this year's mild winter, North Dakota Parks and Recreation is offering alternatives to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

They invite you to take part in activities like their "12 month-12 hikes challenge."

Staff members say roughly the same number of people have been visiting state parks, but are enjoying different experiences than what is normal for winter.

Only a few inches of snow is needed to groom cross-country skiing trails, while around four inches of compacted snow is needed for snowmobiling trails to open.

Despite this, Parks and Rec says most trails are open for hiking.
