(WDAY Radio) -- A Buxton farmer has been sentenced to a year of probation and must pay $10,000 in restitution for crop insurance fraud.

Authorities say Darren Tronson collected money by filing bogus crop insurance claims from 2017 to 2019. He blamed bad weather for his crop losses, but investigators found that bad farming practices caused the losses.

Tronson is also barred from participating in any federal farming programs for 10 years.
