(Fargo, ND) -- Federal Communications Commission Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel issued a statement Thursday afternoon on 911 outages reported overnight in several states, including Minnesota and South Dakota.

“When you call 911 in an emergency, it is vital that call goes through. The FCC has already begun investigating the 911 multi-state outages that occurred last night to get to the bottom of the cause and impact," said Rosenworcel.

South Dakota's outage lasted about three hours.

Eight other states were affected including Nebraska, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

The Department of Homeland Security has warned of increased risks of cyber attacks on 911 services as those services have migrated to digital systems.
