Documents allege Senator Mitchell broke into home to retrieve father's ashes and other belongings

(Detroit Lakes, MN) -- A Detroit Lakes Senator is currently in custody on burglary charges, but told authorities on the scene she was in the home to retrieve sentimental items of her dead father.

Senator Nicole Mitchell from District 47 is currently in custody on burglary charges. Court documents say Mitchell was found by police dressed in all black clothing. According to the documents, Mitchell says she was attempting to retrieve several of her recently-deceased fathers items, including ashes, a flannel shirt, and other sentimental items. According to the documents, the items were in the possession of Mitchell's stepmom. Mitchell says the stepmom ended communications with the family after her father's death. 

Mitchell is currently being held on a burglary charge in the Becker County Jail.
