Opening statements made as man shot by Bismarck Police faces trial

BISMARCK, ND — The prosecution and the defense gave opening statements at the trial of a Bismarck man who was shot during an encounter with police last year.

Daedyn Lewellyn faces several gun charges, and authorities say they were looking for him after a witness said he pulled a gun on someone that day.  When they tracked down Lewellyn at the Interstate Loop U-Haul center, officers tried to arrest him.  However, police say he didn’t comply with their commands and allegedly reached for a gun in his waistband, prompting an officer to shoot him.

His trial is expected to last one week.
