Two killed in Hubbard County SUV, train crash

RURAL HUBBARD COUNTY, MINN. – Two people are dead after a collision between a train and vehicle Friday morning.

Hubbard County Sheriff Cory Aukes says it happened just before 10 a.m. Friday. A Burlington Northern Santa Fe conductor called 9-1-1 to report the crash between the train and SUV at the Hubbard County Road 101 crossing in Farden Township, just west of Cass Lake, Minn.

Deputies and medical personnel arrived and found two victims inside the SUV that were pronounced dead at the scene.

The SUV, driven by 61-year-old Douglas Stewart, was southbound on Hubbard County Road 101 when the vehicle stopped at the stop sign for the railroad tracks. The train, which was operated by 36-year-old Lee Silcox of Kempton, N.D., was westbound. As the train approached the intersection, Stewart proceeded to cross the tracks and was struck by the train.

Also in the vehicle was his 42-year-old wife, Tiffany Stewart.

The Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
