Hoeven Statement on Bureau of Reclamation Proposal to Approve Central North Dakota Water Supply Project

Senator John Hoeven issued yesterday the following statement regarding the Bureau of Reclamation’s proposal to issue a water service contract for the McClusky Canal that would provide up to 20 cubic feet per second of water to be used to help provide a municipal, rural and industrial water supply for Burleigh, Sheridan, Wells, Foster, Kidder, McLean and Stutsman Counties.

“Reliable and affordable utilities, such as water and energy, are central to our high quality of life and economic growth,” Hoeven said. “That's why we pushed Interior Secretary Zinke and the Bureau of Reclamation to approve this water contract. Today's proposal takes us one step closer to making good use of the McClusky Canal and will help ensure an abundant supply of water for residents, farmers and businesses throughout central North Dakota.”

Hoeven has been pressing for approval of the contract, including helping to arrange a meeting between Garrison Diversion Conservancy District officials and Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke. The Bureau of Reclamation issued the proposal after completing its environmental assessment, which found that the water service contract would have no significant impact. The comment period for the proposal will be open until August 31.
