(New York, NY) -- New York City's firefighters union says there will be major staffing shortages when the city's vaccine mandate kicks in Friday.

The mandate calls for all New York City employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Only 65-percent of city firefighters have gotten their shots.

The union predicts some firehouses will be forced to shut down because there won't be enough vaccinated firefighters to run them.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio says he believes more firefighters will get the shot over the next 24 hours.
