Jake Schmaltz, a freshman forward, has been named the NCHC Freshman of the Week. on Monday.
Schmaltz won the award for the second time this season after his three-point weekend against No. 20 Omaha. A North Dakota player has now earned an NCHC honor in six straight weeks.
On Friday night he led the offense with two goals in the Penrose Cup clinching 5-4 overtime victory over Omaha. He also added an assist on Judd Caulfield’s goal on Saturday night. Schmaltz has tallied seven points over his last seven games and played a huge role in the penalty kill that went 9-for-11 over the weekend.
This season Schmaltz leads all UND freshmen in goals (8), assists (14), and points (22) including a plus-8 rating. He is also one of only four Fighting Hawks to play in every regular season game, joining Nick Portz, Tyler Kleven, and Judd Caulfield.
No. 5 North Dakota is opening the NCHC quarterfinals against Colorado College on Friday night 7:07 p.m. It will be a best-of-3 series at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
