As we slide into late October, the pheasant numbers appear to be much stronger than first thought. I never put a lot of credence in the pre-season roadside counts because we never truly know until the crops come out. The harvest this Fall has been lingering behind keeping the pheasants well hidden and unapproachable. Getting into early November, the true story on the bird numbers will be known.

At this point in late October, I couldn't believe the soybeans that are still in the field. Usually the beans are harvested by the 1st of October and then they tackle the corn. Standing crops always make the early season tough and many hunters hang it up for the season. This is the perfect scenario with the late harvest for some awesome late season pheasant hunting. Many birds I have seen on the wing were just getting their colors meaning there was a late hatch. It should be easier into November to determine hens from roosters.

Mother Nature hasn't exactly given us great bird hunting weather but no doubt there will be days in late October and even early November when we will be blessed with some 60's and 70's making for the perfect bird hunting day.
