South High to attend Bruin Brains & Brawn Day and Freshmen Retreat

On Tuesday, October 8, the entire student body at Fargo South High School will be taking part in “Bruin Brains & Brawn Day,” and the Freshmen Retreat. This day is devoted for students to complete Pre-ACT and ASVAB testing, tour college campuses, participate in community service at various organizations through the Fargo/Moorhead community, and bond with fellow classmates.

The schedule for the day is as follows:

Freshmen: Community Service in the morning, Freshmen Retreat at 11:30 a.m.

Sophomores:  Pre-ACT Testing at 7:45 a.m., community service in the afternoon.

Juniors:  Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) Testing at 7:45 a.m., college campus visits in the afternoon (MState, MSUM, NDSU, Concordia).

Seniors: Community service in the morning, College Application/Career Fair in the afternoon.

Community Service from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Location sites include: Adopt-A-Street, Adopt-A -Highway, River Keepers (Lindenwood Park), Fargo Parks (Lindenwood Park), Business Improvement District, Boys & Girls Club, Cass County Emergency Food Pantry.

Community Service from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Location sites include: Adopt-A-Highway, Gladys Rae Shelter & Veteran’s Drop in Center, Bethany on 42nd and on University, River Keepers (Gooseberry Park), Armory, River Keepers T-shirt totes and Project Linus at South High School.

Bruin Brains & Brawn Day is to help students meet several of the Choice Ready criteria included in the Every Student Succeeds Act and the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction’s Choice Ready framework.  All freshmen, sophomores, and seniors will be participating in community service activities throughout Fargo/Moorhead. Staff from the Fargo Military Entrance Processing Station will be at Fargo South facilitating and proctoring the ASVAB.  Seniors will participate in College Application Day where they can apply for admission to one North Dakota University System school free of charge.  For students who do not plan to attend college, they will be provided information regarding workforce needs in our community through a career fair.  Sophomores will take the Pre-ACT to prepare them for the statewide ACT during their junior year. 

Freshmen will participate in the Freshmen Retreat, led by Rollie Johnson. The retreat will provide support as the newest Bruins transition from middle school to high school. During the retreat, students will build class unity and comradery, cultivate the attributes of Bruin CLASS (Character, Leadership, Attitude, Scholarship, and Service), and enhance school spirit. Fargo South staff believes that to do well in school, students need to feel physically and emotionally safe, and to think critically about the impact of their choices.
