Minnesota State High School League moves football, volleyball to spring

The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) has announced a change in their athletics model for the 2020-2021 school year. It’s a move that most will need to get used to, but local athletic administrators in the region say it’s better than what kids saw this spring.

While girls tennis, boys and girls cross country, girls swimming and diving and boys and girls soccer will start August 17, the league announced today that both volleyball and football will move to the spring season.

“On the really good side of today,” Moorhead Area Public Schools Athletic Director Dean Haugo said. “Nothing got cancelled.”

Haugo, who served on the return-to-play committee, says he was surprised with the announcement, which was made in conjunction with today’s MSHSL board meeting. The board had met recently, Haugo says.

“I was surprised,” He said. “I felt there was a really good chance that we’d give things a go in the fall.”

But now that the decision has been made, the page turns for people like Haugo.

“We will provide the best opportunities we can,” he said. “There are going to be some challenges that we are not used to dealing with.”

One of those challenges—Mother Nature in the spring. Moorhead is one of the fortunate districts that have a turf football field.
