Outdoors Angle: Late Season Geese and Mallards

The Flag Outdoors Expert Steve Carney has your weekly Outdoors Angle right here!

As we approach the upcoming end of the duck and goose season, there is still some time left to harvest your birds via field hunting. It's so much fun not having to mess with boats and water but hunt on dry land!

The number one key to field hunting during our late season is scouting and finding the fields the birds are using. I have tried in vain many times to set up adjacent to their feeding fields and spent hours watching the birds drop into a neighboring property. You might think you could "draw" those birds to your field with tons of decoys but is never works....you have to be set up on the field they are using.

Obtaining permission is also a factor as some landowners are cool with letting you on and others refuse permission. Perseverance is the key and you might have to cover hundreds of miles and knock on several doors to gain access. Keep in mind you are not the only one to notice hundreds of birds feeding in someone's field. The first guy to obtain permission wins.

It always makes sense to mix up your body sizes when it comes to both geese and mallards. I use a combination of 3D silhouettes, full body and even some floater decoys. Anything you can do to make your spread stand out and look realistic will make you more successful.

During this late season, I also recommend moving up to BB shot. These late season birds are heavily feathered and 3's and 4's don't do the job like they did in the early season.
