Correa powers Twins past Yankees

On Friday evening the Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees squared off for the second game of their four game series. The Twins would come out on top 4-3.

Minnesota called up starting pitcher Louie Varland for the game to push back Kenta Maeda’s next start and give him more rest. Varland had a quality start tossing six innings while giving up three runs (all solo home runs) and striking out eight batters. The bullpen was outstanding with Emilio Pagan shutting down the Yankees in the seventh inning earning the win. Jorge Lopez handled the eighth inning striking out two batters and picked up the hold. Jhoan Duran set New York down 1-2-3 in the ninth inning to pick up his fourth save of the season.

The Yankees started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with Anthony Volpe and Aaron Judge hitting back-to-back home runs, giving New York a 2-0 lead.

Carlos Correa hit a 331 foot home run in the top of the six inning cutting the deficit to 2-1. Then in the bottom of the inning Giancarlo Stanton hit a solo shot of his own, extending the Yankees lead back to two, this time at 3-1.

In the top of the seventh inning Kyle Garlick hit his first homer of the year, a 380 footer. 3-2 Yankees still with the lead.
Carlos Correa struck again in the top of the eighth inning with a two run double. The Twins now had a 4-3 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

After the game Correa spoke with Glen Perkins to discuss his performance:

"We have a lot of talent, we have great brains in the front office and we've got that dog in us."

Game three of their four game series is Saturday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 12:05 p.m. Tyler Mahle will get the nod for the Twins.
