(Minneapolis, MN) -- Former Twins catcher Joe Mauer has the opportunity to become a first-ballot Hall of Famer later this winter.

Mauer was one of 12 first-time players placed on the 2024 Hall of Fame ballot yesterday. The St. Paul-native was Minnesota's first overall pick in the 2001 MLB Draft, and he was with the big-league club from 2004 until his retirement in 2018. Mauer is the only American League catcher in MLB history to win a batting title, a feat he accomplished three times. He was also named the 2009 American League MVP. Mauer racked up 2,123 hits and hit .306 with 143 home runs and 923 RBI during his career.

He and one-time Twins pitcher Bartolo Colon both join former Twins centerfielder Torii Hunter on the ballot. The 2024 Hall of Fame class will be revealed on January 23rd.
